Kappahl Group's customers continue to say no to bags – surplus generates 1.7 million SEK for environmental organizations

Kappahl Group, together with its customers and the Newbie brand, is making a difference by reducing the use of shopping bags. For the eighth consecutive year, Kappahl Group is donating the surplus from bag sales to organizations dedicated to sustainable development.

Paper bags on a table

All types of bags—whether made of paper, plastic, or fabric—have an environmental impact. Since 2017, Kappahl Group has actively worked to reduce bag consumption and raise awareness of their negative effects. This initiative is part of the company’s broader mission to contribute to a responsible fashion industry.

As part of this effort, the surplus from bag sales is donated to sustainability-focused organizations in Kappahl Group’s operating countries. In Sweden, proceeds go to Keep Sweden Tidy (Håll Sverige Rent); in Norway, to the Retail Environmental Fund (Handelens Miljøfond); in Finland, to Keep the Archipelago Clean (Håll Skärgården Ren); and in Poland, to Nasza Ziemia (Our Earth).

Commitment to Further Reduction

“Our stores currently use four million plastic bags per year—a significant decrease from ten years ago, when the number was 20 million. Despite this major reduction, our goal is to minimize bag use even further. We are also continuously improving the sustainability of the bags we still need. Today, all our in-store and e-commerce plastic bags are made from 100% recycled plastic, which has the lowest carbon footprint. Additionally, we design them to use as little material as possible—lower weight means less environmental impact,” says Sandra Roos, Vice President Sustainability at Kappahl Group.

Kappahl Group remains committed to driving sustainable change in the fashion industry and encourages customers to join the effort by choosing to forgo shopping bags whenever possible.
